Sydney FC wins on late Emerton goal

SYDNEY (AP) -- Brett Emerton scored in the 89th-minute to give Alessandro Del Piero's Sydney FC a 1-0 win over A-League leader Central Coast on Thursday.

The win lifted Sydney, which lost 7-2 the last time the teams met, out of last place and into ninth, a point ahead of the Melbourne Heart.

Later Thursday, Perth substitute Nick Ward scored an 87th-minute equalizer for a 1-1 draw against the Western Sydney Wanderers.

The Wanderers appeared headed for their fourth straight win after Labinot Haliti's 38th-minute strike gave them the lead against the run of play. But Ward's powerful volley off a Ryo Nagai cross earned the home side a point.

"I just sort of hung out at the back post and luckily enough it came to me," Ward said.

Jeremy Brockie scored goals five minutes apart in the second half to give the Wellington Phoenix a 3-2 comeback win over the Heart.

Melbourne took a 2-0 lead early in the first half thanks to goals by Golgol Mebrahtu and Andrew Durante, but Louis Fenton reduced the deficit to one goal before the break.

On Wednesday, Brazilian forward Henrique's 65th-minute goal gave the defending champion Brisbane Roar a 1-0 win over second-place Adelaide United, which trails Central Coast by two points.

Henrique tapped into an empty net after teammate Mitch Nichols went on a run through Adelaide's defense from outside the box and then passed when he came up against goalkeeper Eugene Galekovic. It was a first win for Brisbane's new coach Mike Mulvey and moved the side into eighth place.

"They were hurting before I came in, in terms of where they were on the table," Mulvey said. "Together we have got a fight on our hands, we don't want to be down there."

The Melbourne Victory travel to Newcastle for a match with the Jets on Friday to conclude the 13th round.
