The Streetsboro Police Department has scheduled its 2014 Citizen Police Academy for Sept. 17 to Nov. 12.
The focus of this nine-week academy is educating citizens about the Streetsboro Police Department, its organization, operations and role in the community. Participants gain an understanding of police department responsibilities and the laws that govern it. The goal of the academy is to strengthen the partnership between the community and the police department, which is beneficial to both.
Classes are led by members of the police department, and certificates are awarded upon completion of the program. There is no cost to attend the Citizen Academy, and it is open to residents 21 and older. Sessions are on Wednesday evenings from 6-8:30 p.m. at the Streetsboro Police Station, 2080 Route 303.
"The Citizen Academy is a great resource for community members as it gives them an opportunity to go 'behind the scenes' and learn about how their police department operates on a daily basis," said Streetsboro Police Chief Roy Mosley III. "Our staff members contribute to making this program successful, and I encourage any resident who is interested in learning more about the Streetsboro Police Department to apply for the upcoming academy. Feedback from our 2013 Citizen Academy attendees was overwhelmingly positive."
Among the topics reviewed in the program are K-9 use, criminal law, narcotics, traffic crash and investigation of operating under the influence violations. A ride-along session with an on-duty officer and a tour of the county jail facility are also incorporated.
Applicants must have a clean criminal history. The class space is limited to 25 students. Applications for the Citizen Academy are available via download on the Streetsboro Police Department website, www.streetsboropolice.org, or may be picked up at the police department. Completed applications are due back to the Department by Sept. 3.
