Big Dee's Tack and Vet Supplies has hosted its grand opening March 19 in its new location in the former Walmart building.
The new store opened Feb. 28, said Co-owner Brenda Miavitz of the family-owned business.
A grand opening celebration is planned for May 2 from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and May 3 from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. "when the weather gets a little better and we can have some stuff outside," she said.
In the new store, there is a greater emphasis on apparel, footwear and items for dogs and cats, compared to the Route 43 location which had a higher percentage of equine products.
"Really, we're just kind of getting organized," said Miavitz. "It gets a little better every day."
The retail section of the store, the area most customers will see, is 17,000 square feet, but that is just a portion of the 103,000-square-foot building. There also is about 7,000 square feet of office space and 79,000 square feet of warehouse and shipping space at the facility, which has a busy internet business, according to Miavitz.
During the move, there were three days during which there was no shipping from Big Dees's, after which the company returned to its next-day shipping.
"We are just elated that you guys have grown the way you have," said Mayor Glenn Broska told employees. "We just can't thank you enough."
Miavitz said the company employs a mix of 57 full- and part-time employes in Streetsboro.
