STEM Club seeking funds to buy soapbox cars for May 18 race

Two cars built by Streetsboro Middle School students may race down the track at Derby Downs May 18 in a race hosted by All-American Soap Box Derby for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) classes and clubs in the area.

Developed by PBS, local schools and the Soap Box Derby, the event will feature cars built by students from kits.

The Super Stock Kit, which is designed with middle school students in mind, can be assembled, taken apart and reassembled, allowing all students to have a hand in the building process.

Streetsboro Middle School's STEM club is seeking donations to help come up with the $1,200 to purchase two kits. The sponsoring company or organizations will be able to have their logos painted on the car for the race, as well as on race team T-shirts.

The Gravity Racing Challenge last year attracted "over 400 educators and students and 65 school teams from Ohio and North Carolina," according to http://www.aasbd.org/, the All-American Soapbox Derby's website.

The event last year included elements other than racing: photography, infomercial marketing and graphic design competitions also took place, states the website.

For more information on helping to sponsor the two Streetsboro cars, contact STEM Club Adviser Rich Day at rday@rockets.sparcc.org or by calling 330-626-4905.
