Visitors to Hower House this holiday season are invited to look for seven swans a'awimming, nine ladies dancing, five golden rings, 11 pipers piping and more from the traditional Christmas carol in this year's holiday display.
This year's decor, themed "Hower House Spirit of Gifting: a holiday tradition," focuses on both Christmas gifts and -- perhaps the best-known song about gifts -- "The Twelve Days of Christmas," said Linda Bussey, director of Hower House.
"The volunteers wanted to incorporate the whole tradition of gift giving," Bussey said. "You'll find a lot of decorations in the theme of the 'Twelve Days of Christmas,' and a lot of vintage ads."
The East Parlor encompasses the entire theme in general, with a large Christmas tree decorated with vintage children's illustrations related to "The Twelve Days of Christmas." In the library, guests are encouraged to find the pairs of turtle doves hidden among the books and furnishings. Another room incorporates French decor for the three french hens.
Hower House's holiday display can be seen through Dec. 29. Self-guided tours are available Wednesday through Saturday from noon to 3:30 p.m., and Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m., with the last tour starting one-half hour before closing. Hower House is closed Dec. 23 through 26. Group and guided tours are available by appointment. Guests also can stop by the Cellar Door Store after the tour for a complimentary cup of wassail and a holiday cookie.
Admission is $8 for adults, $6 for seniors 65 and older, and $2 for students and seniors. Children 6 and younger are free with an adult admission. Parking is free.
