Fans of these music groups also are probably familiar with Eliot Lewis, who was a member of The Average White Band for about 12 years and has been a member of Hall and Oates for about 10 years. In addition, Lewis also is a featured musician on the weekly television series, "Live From Daryl's House."

Lewis himself will perform solo at the Akron Civic Theatre Dec. 21 at 8 p.m.

"I've played there with Hall and Oates, but this is going to be my first solo show," Lewis said about playing at the Akron Civic. "I think Ohioans have a great appreciation for music. I've come out there for many years. I look forward to coming back there and making some new friends along the way."

Lewis said his show will feature him on guitar, perhaps keyboard, performing a variety of songs ranging from Smokey Robinson and Todd Rundgren to ZZ Top. He also will perform his own songs, particularly from his newly released live CD, "Live and Up Front," which was recorded in Ohio during Lewis's fall tour. It was released Nov. 21.

"It's pretty cool," he said of the upcoming concert, "It's a nice collection of classic rock and my own stuff, which is sort of a bluesy rock."

Fans of "Live From Daryl's House," which appears weekly on VH-1, will have new episodes to look forward to early next year, Lewis said.

"We are taping a lot of new episodes, which will come on in mid-January," he said. "There's a lot of exciting stuff coming up."

Lewis said that those looking to get into the music business must "really, really practice their craft."

"Get to know your instrument as well as you can," Lewis said. "Don't give up. It can be a long and unusual road to success. What was beneficial for me was being versatile. Being able to play multiple instruments and fitting in a variety of situations opened a lot of doors for me."
