First Night Akron returns to help ring in the new year

Now in its 18th year, First Night Akron is a New Year's Eve celebration that is a family-friendly, alcohol-free celebration of the arts.

First Night Akron is Dec. 31 from 6 p.m. to midnight in various indoor venues throughout downtown Akron. The First Night Akron 2014 venues include the Akron Art Museum, Akron Civic Theatre, Akron-Summit County Public Library, Greystone Hall, John S. Knight Center, Mainstage on Main Street, METRO Transit Center, The Shoppes at Akron Centre, Summit Artspace and Zion Lutheran Church.

The fireworks displays take place on S. Main St. in front of Lock 3 at 9 p.m. and midnight.

First Night admission buttons help support the cost of the celebration and provide admission to all First Night venues on event night. Admission buttons are $10 for those 10 and older; children under 10 are free when accompanied by a button wearing adult.

Free parking is available in all city owned decks and lots in Downtown after 3 p.m. on First Night.

Complementary METRO buses and City Trolleys run the First Night Loop from 6 to 11:30 p.m. Jump on a bus in front of Canal Park after the midnight fireworks to get a ride to the parking lots and garages. METRO service to Downtown is free with a First Night Button after 4 p.m. on Dec. 31. The last zoned buses will depart from the METRO Transit Center at 1 a.m. (limited routes serviced at this time).
