Sixth annual Plein Air competition seeks artists

Published:

Cuyahoga Valley National Park (CVNP), the Conservancy for Cuyahoga Valley National Park, and the Peninsula Area Chamber of Commerce recently announced the details of the Sixth Annual Plein Air Competition-Along the Crooked River. This year's plein air event will take place in CVNP and the Village of Peninsula June 6 through 8.

Plein Air is based on a French expression referring to the process of painting "in the open air". Peninsula's competition, which has drawn participants from around the country, invites artists of two-dimensional art medium to paint at selected sites in the Village of Peninsula as well as locations along the Cuyahoga River.

The Competition is open to artists, 18 years of age and over and artists may produce as many works as they wish during the competition. However, they may only submit two pieces for judging. Artwork must be created on site in the true impromptu plein air style. Prizes will be awarded.

Awards will be presented at the artists' reception June 29, from 3 to 5 p.m., at the John F. Seiberling Gallery. A juried exhibit of some of the works created during the competition will be on display and available for sale at the gallery June 30 through Aug. 8, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Weekends by appointment. Free.

John F. Seiberling Gallery, in the Administrative Offices of the Conservancy for Cuyahoga Valley National Park, is at 1403 West Hines Hill Road in Peninsula.

The award winning pieces will be displayed at the Conservancy's Trail Mix Peninsula store, located at 1600 West Mill Street, Peninsula 44264. The store is open daily, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Registration for participants is now open and will occur through the end of the event. For more information visit www.explorepeninsula.com/plein-air-competition, or contact Debra or Steve Bures at 330-657-2788.
