A tomato tasting contest in conjunction with the Mantua Rotary Club Farmers Market will be Aug. 24 at Christ Lutheran Church on Route 44.
Registration is free and runs from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Judging is from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. Anyone can enter homegrown tomatoes, and the public present at the market will judge, along with celebrity judges.
Categories are best small tomato for eating and cooking, largest tomato, most unusual-shaped tomato, prettiest tomato and best overall tomato. There will be bobbing for tomatoes for kids and adults after the tasting contest.
Entrants should bring a container of eight to 10 larger tomatoes for slicing and tasting and a full quart of smaller tomatoes. They should be labeled by variety, and will be judged on appearance, taste, texture and aroma. Entries also should bring a small, clean cutting board and small sharp knife.
