Streetsboro No. 2 statewide in safe cities ranking

Streetsboro -- Streetsboro was ranked No. 2 on a list of 50 safest cities in Ohio published by SafeWise, a home security organization with offices throughout the country.

"I'm proud of that," Mayor Glenn Broska said. "I was very proud to see they gave us that award. It's very impressive. It shows our police department is being proactive in protecting the city from crime. This is a good thing for the city overall."

Brooke Niemeyer, director of media relations for SafeWise, said this is the first ranking, but the company plans to do yearly rankings in the future.

"We considered everything from the most recent FBI crime data from 2011, population [cities over 15,000 people as of 2011] and population growth, to looking at safety initiatives implemented by these cities like neighborhood watch programs, child safety initiatives and police force programs," Niemeyer said. "We also considered safety resources that city governments have made available to their citizens.

"From the hundreds of cities in Ohio, we narrowed the list down to 50 and assigned rankings, according to how the city met our criteria," Niemeyer said.

Other Northeast Ohio cities on the list include No. 1 Broadview Heights, 3. Hudson, 5. Brook Park, 6. North Ridgeville, 7. Twinsburg, 9. Aurora, 10. Solon, 16. Berea, 19. North Olmsted, 20. Parma Heights, 24. Willoughby, 27. Mayfield Heights, 30. South Euclid, 31. Strongsville, 33. Stow, 35. Tallmadge and 41. Kent.

"A lot of the communities around us are ranked highly," Broska said. "It shows that police departments in this part of Ohio are doing their jobs. This is a safe area to live. Police are preventing crime. It's a pattern all around us. It's good for our region that so many cities are ranked so highly."

John Roskelley, SafeWise security analyst, said, "When neighbors know each other, they look out for each other. Ohio's safest cities are brimming with civically minded residents who clearly take pride in where they live."

SafeWise has done similar top 50 lists in other states across the country.

According to Niemeyer, SafeWise is "a community-focused security organization that is the source for everything safety and security. We help [people] compare security providers so they can best protect their home the way they want to. The SafeWise Report provides resources to help make homes and communities a safer place. We provide home security tips and tools, as well as the most recent news in the safety industry."
