Police issuing safety citations to bicyclists for helmet use

Published:

Streetsboro Police officers will be issuing citations to bicyclists this summer -- safety citations for those bicyclists wearing helmets, that is.

The department is participating the AAA's Helmet Smart campaign, which targets young bicycle riders who are very vulnerable to head injury while riding bicycles, according to a recent news release from Streetsboro Police Chief Roy Mosley III.

Children under age 14 are particularly susceptible to head injury, yet few wear helmets, which can be purchased for at little as $10.

Parents can help by encouraging their children to always wear helmets and by setting a good example, always wearing helmets themselves.

Helmets have been shown to reduce the risk of life-long brain injury by as 85 percent.

If a child receives a safety citation, simply take half to Dunkin' Donuts in Streetsboro for a free donut of their choice and mail the other half to AAA East Central to be entered into a drawing for a new bicycle.

For more information, call the Streetsboro Police Department at 330-626-4976 or the AAA East Central at 1-800-845-0375.
