Letter: Applauds those who voted levy down

According to the May 9 issue of The Gateway News, the school levy in Streetsboro was voted down in the May 8 election 1,455 to 949 votes, according to final, but unofficial results from the Portage County Board of Elections.

I agree with the view that Issue 4's lack of an expiration date was unacceptable. It's not only property taxes going up, but everything. It hurts the people on fixed incomes the most.

I applaud those who took a stand and voted "No;" however, as always, the School Board will not take "No" for an answer, and the issue will be back in the August special election until they wear us down and they get what they want.

Please, Streetsboro voters, don't be bullied. My advice to the School Board is to learn to live on less and do without. It takes almost half my mother's Social Security income check twice a year to pay the property taxes, even with the Homestead exemption. It doesn't leave much for all the other expenses.

State leaders in Columbus should help fix the schools' financial dilemma. Now that we have a Democrat for governor, what is his plan to remedy the problem?

Mary Alice Trimmer

Wow, we are down to name calling, kudos to you. Maybe you should re-read the bible verse you have in your post. While you are at it, check your spelling, grammar and punctuation. Those appear to need a little work. If I marked up your post with a red pen from all the errors I would be out of ink. A few errors here or there is ok, but when you have to re-read sections because of the errors, it makes comprehension difficult.

You must not have lived very many places, because Streetsboro by far has one of the lowest tax rates in the Cleveland area.

You must not have read my posts very carefully, or do not understand what a "POOR farming community" is. So no, not a rich guy, those people live in the neighboring communities like Hudson.

Do you currently benefit from the Homestead Exemption? Do you realize now(as of July 2007) that you can exclude twenty five thousand dollars (25,000.00) of house value from your property taxes. You used to have to make below a certain amount of money, now it has been changed so that there is no limit. Do you know that this change will save the average Ohio homeowner who is disabled or 65 and older $400 per year? Of course you have to make sure to put your application in before October, and you need to renew every year.

Now that there has been some tax relief, doesn't it sound like a good idea to help out the school children in the area by passing the levy? Doesn't it sound like a good idea to give back to the community? You wouldn't even be giving half of it back.

Did you read the latest article on school funding? Even the state says we are about to be in some trouble. So, VOTE YES IN AUGUST to support your local schools.Your kids deserve better.

well as usual im going to throw my 2 cents in because its all i have
whne i was in school they didnt even have a vocational school where a kid could go and learn a trade to keep his or her interest in academics
how many kids from streetsboro are going to the vocational school?
another thing is this those of us on disability sometimes dont have an extra 60 dollars to give someone elses kids im sorry but that just how it is in the real world
you talk about saving when streetsboro resisents have to pay more fees for this and that then any city i have ever lived in and now want to raise the taxes again
i say live within your means that is what one of your letters states and as far as budgeting you try it with a new born and getting bills you cant pay and doing the best you can to pay but still cant on a fixed income obviously you have never been there just some rich idiot flapping their gums remember in the Bible it says yee shall reap what yee sow

So what do you call those modular classrooms that we keep having to buy? I call them shacks. Inner City school kids in the LBC (Long Beach Califonia) use them as well . Of course they happen to be behind barb wire fences to keep out the local riff-raff.

What part of 14% below the average community contribution is hard to understand? What is so hard about $60 more per year per 100k in house value? Taxes in Streetsboro are Low Low Low. Look around the area and compare.

Being a grduate of SHS, what was your ACT score? Where did you go to college? Did you graduate? How did your education at SHS help you?

It's typical of small minded people to think about themselves rather than the overall good of the community.I am from a poor farming community in western ohio originally, and they never voted down a school issue, because they wanted better for their kids. Streetsboro doesnt care what happens to their kids, just dont make me pay $60+ year. It's pathetic. Heck, I don't even have any kids and i voted for it. I want to see the community succeed. It all starts with the schools. If you can't support the schools, might as well tell the kids to get an application for the new walmart and get used to a tough life early.Thats what you are telling them by voting down school issues.

I agree with you,
Hey,
Let all the SMOKERS keep putting
Smoking in public places back on the
ballots until it passes too!

How come they CAN'T understand the word NO?

It is a shame that schools aren't getting adequate funding from the government. As cliched as it may be, these kids will be running the country in the not-so-distant future, and everyone deserves a decent education.

Unfortunately, home owners end up picking up the tab. As Ms. Trimmer stated, many residents of Streetsboro are living on fixed incomes. When it boils down to personal financial need versus the school district's, guess which one comes first. It would be nice and noble to be able to help out the schools, but in reality it's not possible.

For the record, Streetsboro schools are not "shacks". I graduated from SHS in 2002. It may not have been the most glamourous school district to be in, but it is sufficient to the students' needs.

Streetsboro does not care. We back our schools with 14% less tax support than the average of the state and we don't care. Our average student ACT score is 19 and we dont care. Students are taught in shacks rather than brick and morter classrooms and we dont care. The school district is rated in the 40's out of all the suburbs and we don't care(Cleveland Magazine rankings).

Here are the facts. The state hasnt increased funding in nearly 10 years. They won't increase funding because the community isnt supporting the schools(remember that 14% below the state average thing.... ya.. thats why).10 years ago the state funded 50% of the schools operating cost. But now its 25%. Why is that?We are still getting the same amount of money. If you guessed inflation and a rise in population you may already be a winner. You see, when a city grows, that mean there are more people, which means there are more kids. With more kids you get more costs. It really isnt that hard to figure out. So if the community wont support the kids, and the state wont support the community because they dont support the kids, what do you have? A school that doesnt have the means to properly educate its students. So basically Streetsboro thinks having uneducated kids is an ok tradeoff as long as they don't have to pay anything. Notice I didnt say dumb kids, just uneducated because the public doesnt give a hoot about their future.

So in order to get more help from the state, the community has to help out.Boy, thats crazy talk.

As for hurting those on fixed incomes twice a year, there is this new fangled idea called budgeting. You see, if you hold back money from each check during the year, you have the money you need to pay taxes when it's tax time. You mean you dont have to scrounge for money in a tax month if you budget? Brilliant!
