Letter: Failing levy cheats children, seniors

I, like the writer of a June 6 "letter to the editor" titled "Applauds those who voted levy down," live on a fixed income.

I have three children. I also have two parents at the Gardens of the Western Reserve in Streetsboro. I totally get that it takes some people almost half their Social Security, twice a year, to pay taxes. I understand that money in your senior years goes out much faster than it comes in.

However, I voted "For" the school levy, which was on the May 8 ballot.

Did anyone who is reading this letter attend a public school? Did you or have your children or your neighbors' children attended a public school?

If so, who paid for that education?

When we cheat our children out of basic things, like busing and computers, what message does that send?

Have you been in Streetsboro High School where I believe the district is trying to "live on less and do without?"

Better schools build a better community, and excellent schools build an outstanding community.

In my opinion, cities where people put their money into their schools have higher property values, and residents stand to make more on their properties when they need to be sold to take care of Mom or Dad.

By voting against the levy, not only do you cheat our kids, but hurt all seniors, who sooner or later may need to sell. My parents always complained about taxes.

Having the investment in their home in a good community with great schools, upon sale, pays for their care now. Had they lived anywhere else, because their No. 1 selling point was the school district, they would have lost thousands.

To people who say, "Well, I can not afford it," I say, "Our children are worth it."

Please support our local schools.

Since you are a "PECKER", you should have plenty of time to look over what you are typing to be sure it is correct. Doing less than that doesn't allow your points to makes sense to others. This makes them ineffective. It's good to use Word. Make sure you click on the squiggly green and red lines underneath the text you type. These provide suggestions to fix improper grammar and spelling.

Support your schools. Better schools make better communities.

I don't know why people have to be insulting on feedbacks.
Isn't this just a place to let ideas and voices be heard now your right I am not a typist I will give you that but my education is a graduate and my spelling is great though I never did take typing so I am a pecker but for those of us peckers out there enough is enough and computers are a great thing I'm using word now so hopefully you wont insult me again.
I'm just tired of paying double fees.
Also we are probably going to home school out kids my wife speaks 3 languages how many do you speak fluently.
Anyway I hear the city is reluctant to make a trade for the park as it will be another inconvenience for the parks department
Where do you plan on getting the money to build this new school? I hope I don't have to pay for it. People enough is enough let Wal-Mart pay for it they have lots of money building a new store or did they get tax abatement for that too?

The state has expanded the Homestead Exemption. Seniors, you are getting a tax cut. Now is the time to vote for your local schools to help make a better tomorrow for streetsboro.

"The Ohio General Assembly has enacted a new, expanded Homestead Exemption that will provide additional property tax relief to qualified senior citizens and permanently and totally disabled Ohioans.

Previously, most senior citizens and disabled Ohioans were excluded from the Homestead Exemption because of income tests. The new exemption offers eligible homeowners, regardless of income, the opportunity to shield $25,000 of the market value of their home from property taxation.

The catch? Seniors and disabled Ohioans who weren't previously eligible must apply with their local county auditor by Oct. 1, 2007 in order to take advantage of the Homestead Exemption, which will save the typical homeowner about $400 per year.

The new Homestead Exemption is available to all homeowners 65 and older and all totally and permanently disabled homeowners.

Hold on to your pocket books. There is money to be made on our homes "if" this levy passes for the school. You'll see the propery prices around here will go up and up and up! It's an investment. Pass the levy and everybody is happy! Maybe move to bigger home you always wanted pay off some bills, skys the limit. We bought in the Nordonia area when the schools were Ok fine like Boro's now. Then the levy's passed and our home value went up and up! It's true! Now we are hoping in the Boro it happens. I must add I love it here I don't think we will move.

Correction. The following line

"So no, they would have come anyway, and it is ignorant of you to state that."

Should read:

"So no, they would NOT have come anyway, and it is ignorant of you to state that."

You say your father had a hard life, and you have a hard life. You stated you have kids. Don't you want them to have a better life? Don't you want them to have every possible advantage that you and your father didn't have? Thats what this is all about. You make the school better, and you give your kids the best chance possible at a successful and happy life.Voting levies down is the same as telling your kids you don't care about them. It's that simple. Either you care what becomes of your kids, or you do not.Vote yes in August to give the children of Streetsboro their best chance in life.

Your child will walk to school( or be dropped off by a friend or reletive) if you do not support the school. It is simple economics. If there is not enough money for all services, you start cutting services. One of those services that cost money (and with gas prices at an all time high, it is a significant cost)is school transportation. It is a privilege, not a right. If there isnt money there, it will go. Plain and simple.

The schools shouldn't be blamed for the failure of the local goverment. If the local government has caused the school to receive less funds, then it is up to the public to make sure the school has the funds it needs. Streetsboro schools collect 14% less tax than the state average. So by not increasing funding you are telling them they are worth 14% less than the average school child in Ohio. You can tell your child they are special all you want, but if your actions show that you really think they are below average, then you are nothing but a lier.

Real Estate isnt at an all time high. It Peaked a couple of years ago and the real estate market is slumping, BIG time. For sale signs are up everywhere. This is probably because they gave up hope that the community would stop doing the wrong thing (voting down levies) and start doing the right thing(voting for levies).

You sir, are ignorant. You can overcome that, however you must read a little more. You attract companies by location and incentives. If it's a good location, but the incentives are not there, the companies will not come. Instead they will go to a different community that offers better incentives. Companies are on this earth for one purpose, and that purpose is to make money. If they can make more money by being in a community that offered better incentives, that is what they will do.So no, they would have come anyway, and it is ignorant of you to state that.

I encourage all of the community to learn the issues. Once people are informed, they will be able to form an opinion based on the facts and figures instead of ignorant and emotional hearsay.

by the way i hardly new my father as i was growing up as he had to work 2 jobs to make ends meet and pay these taxes so if you think i am just being hardnosed guess again i am disabled and i am a home owner and please dont tell me how tough it is ok i stand by what i said and by the way if our fair city would quit passsing unfair ordinaces most of us can not afford maybe we would vote for a levy now and again but most of us have hardened our hearts against these levies becasue of the stunts they have tried to pull in the past
does the school still own that property on 43 south? seems to me real estate is at an all time high right now in the boro if you sell that i think your finanacial woes would ease a bit also i wish now i had purchased my home somewhere else becasue i not quite sure i want my kids to go to school here as i dont want a young child threatened with the possibility they might have to walk to school becasue the school threatens them with no busing unless they get their new taxes and then you have all thesae tax abatements being given to these giant conglomerants like mopar off mondial oh yeah didnt they just close? did we not just get left with an empty building and we never saw a dime of taxes there? no they want you and me to take up the slack becasue of their faulty decisions down there at city hall we need to vote in some honest councilmen and and an honest mayor and repeal every one of those dam abatements those companys would have come anyways

I had voted no on the levy the last few years until this last vote. I did vote yes because streetsboro h.s. could use a lot of work, and I feel the kids do not deserve that when cities surrounding us like Aurora, Hudson, Twinsburg, etc. are all pretty much first class high schools. If you do not have children in school think about this. If the levy had passed it would of cost every homeowner approx. $100-$200 more per year on their taxes. Do you really think that your home will not appreciate more than that per year if we had a high school comparible to Hudson, Aurora, etc.!! Think about that, this is an investment in our community that can benefit everyone in a positive way, but if you do not actually take few minutes to think about it you will never realize that. It took me a few years, but now I realize this and I will vote yes everytime till it passes.

God help your children if you are the one educating them. If English isn't your native language, then I apologize. Otherwise, send them to school to be properly educated .The state lottery only helps out a little. Since the Lottery's inception in 1974, the Lottery has contributed more than $9 billion to education in Ohio. While this is a significant amount of money, the State of Ohio has more than 600 school districts and the statewide education budget in Fiscal Year 1998 was $11.3 billion. So, that's an average of 3.75 million per year that is divided among 600 school districts in the state. So, the state lottery isn't funding jack. We (the community of Streetsboro)are backing our schools 14% less than the state average. Because we are not backing our schools the state hasn't increased funding. They just need to look at our lack of concern and involvement (voting down levies) to see there is no need to help. Streetsboro has to help itself before the state will help. Schools only take up a small portion of your property taxes. Chances are you wouldn't even notice if they stopped taking them out. There is a good likelihood though that you would find something else to complain about though.

It's time to wake up Streetsboro. Start having some concern about your children's future. Otherwise you are condemning them to a career of being a cashier at the new Super Walmart.
