Founder Streetsboro Car Wash and Laundry

Gaynelle Virginia Shope, 89, of Streetsboro died Dec. 18, 2007, at Rockynol Ledges in Akron.

Born on March 5, 1918, in Mason County, W.Va. to the late Ephrian M. and Carrie E. (Whealdon) Call, Mrs. Shope has lived in Streetsboro since 1946.

When World War II began, Mrs. Shope traveled to Ravenna to work at the Ravenna Arsenal. She met Robert William Shope there, and they were married on March 30, 1946, in Parkersburg, W.Va. They farmed 250 acres north of the Ohio Turnpike in Streetsboro that became Sunny Slopes housing development. After earning her private pilot's license in 1961, she and her husband began building the Streetsboro Car Wash and Laundry in 1965.

A member of the Streetsboro United Methodist Church, she is an active member in the Order of the Eastern Star, a Past Matron and 50-year member of the James A. Garfield Chapter No. 508 in Aurora, a current member of the Olive Chapter No. 53 in Kent and a member of White Shrine. She volunteered at the Open M Food Bank in Akron.

Mrs. Shope is survived by her daughters Gay Nell E. Shope of Streetsboro and Roberta (Frank) Reed of Ravenna; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert W. Shope in 1987; son Robert C. Hope; granddaughter Jenny Shope Bowersock; and brothers Everett Call, John Call, and Hobart Call.

Funeral services were set for Dec. 22 at Shorts Funeral Home with the Rev. Byron L. George officiating. Interment was to follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Streetsboro.
