Parents can enroll their kindergarten child Feb. 27 between 9:15 and 11 a.m. and 1:30 and 6:15 p.m.

Remember that children need to be 5 years old by Aug. 1 to be eligible.

Parents must bring a copy of their child's birth certificate, Social Security card, immunization records, proof of residency, and be prepared to fill out a brief parent questionnaire to assist the district in placing children. If a child is in preschool or day care, preschool or daycare teachers should submit a summary of her progress in their program, as well.

The school also suggests bringing phone numbers for preferred physicians and dentists, as well as a hospital's phone number, because parents will be filling out enrollment forms that require this type of information.

If a child is behind in his immunizations, Child Health Services will be present Feb. 27 from 3:30 to 6:15 p.m. to administer shots. A custodial parent must be present for Child Health Services to offer this service. There will be an $8 charge per immunization.

Parents must have their son or daughter's current immunization record.

During registration, parents may sign up for Safety Town and for Surround Care. For more information, call Wait Primary School at 330-422-2400.

Seniors, juniors can learn about scholarships

Streetsboro High School will present a program on local scholarships Feb. 28 for Streetsboro seniors and juniors at 8 p.m. in the high school library, 1900 Annalane Drive. The program will outline what planning needs to be done and what is available. The program will be directed by School to Work Coordinator Joe Huber.

Teachers reach out to continue special events

Several members of Streetsboro High School's language arts faculty are seeking help from the community to continue special events and activities.

High school teachers Greg Cielec, Polly Dierkens, and Jim Boardwine hope to raise more money to continue longtime activities at the high school, associated with the language arts. So far, this year, Cielec said they've raised around $2,000.

The teachers are seeking donations of $200 from businesses and organizations to support the high school's newspaper; The Orbiter; drama; poetry activities; songwriting; "Focus," the school's literary journal; and equipment associated with those activities.

Cielec, who serves as adviser the literary journal "Focus," said he and other language arts teachers need the money because they are "doing more and different things than before."

Cielec said Dierkens, The Orbiter's faculty adviser, plans to publish more color pages in a couple editions of the newspaper, and Cielec said he plans to do the same in this year's edition of "Focus."

The funding goes "100 percent" to students said Cielec, including organizing poetry slams, when students take turns all day at an open microphone in the library, reciting their favorite poetry (original or classic) and performing songs.

In exchange for a $200 donation, businesses and organizations will receive a range of perks: Free tickets to every drama production produced; donors' businesses will be recognized in each issue of The Orbiter; they will be listed on the back of all playbills, as well as the literary journal; they will be recognized on T-shirts given out at the school's "Poetry Slams."
