Maplewood Care Center resident Emory J. Helsel, 83, a Ravenna resident for 50 years, died Feb. 27, 2008 at Maplewood Care Center in Streetsboro. Born Nov. 28, 1924 in Puritan, Pa. to the late Earl and Mary (Ritchie) Helsel, Mr. Helsel was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He retired from the engineering department at the Ford Motor Co. in Walton Hills. Survivors include his daughter Rebecca (Bill) Thompson of Akron; sons John D. (Pattie) of Florida, Thomas (Charyl) of Ravenna, Richard of South Carolina; 10 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; and brother Kenneth Helsel of Michigan. Mr. Helsel is preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Mae (Bowers); sons Jeffrey and Emory; granddaughter Kaci; three sisters; and two brothers. A funeral service took place March 3 at Shorts Funeral Home's Ravenna Chapel with the Rev. Bill Thomas officiating, with interment following at Grandview Memorial Park in Ravenna.
