Streetsboro -- The city has terminated its contract with a local towing company and told the business to stop impounding vehicles behind the Route 14 property it rents.

City Zoning Inspector Stacey Vadaj said Streetsboro Auto and Truck Inc. has stopped operating an impound lot, which city officials said violated a variety of city ordinances. Until April 14, the business was providing towing services to the city.

Streetsboro Auto and Truck owner Robert Reinard stated in an April 16 letter to Wagner he's doing what he can to clean up the lot.

"I have cleaned up the lot, scrapped everything that I could legally scrap, and the pond has been cleaned," he stated in the letter.

In a February letter, Law Director David Benjamin told Reinard, David and Jennifer Metheney; All County Investments; and Streetsboro Auto and Truck he believes the business or property owners were violating rules prohibiting storage of junked vehicles on private property; and violating the city's litter law.

Mayor Tom Wagner said the city terminated the contract with the towing company last week because of the impound lot. He said the police department is now using Interstate Towing of Twinsburg, which tows vehicles to an out-of-city site.

In a March 31 letter to Benjamin, Reinard stated repairable vehicles are being taken to Action Auto Body and Excalibur, and irreparable vehicles are being taken to a site in Ravenna Township.

Reinard and David Metheney didn't respond to calls from The Gateway News for further comment.

Something has clogged a pipe flowing from a pond within impound lot into an adjacent pond just a few yards away in the Maplewood condominium development, said Vadaj.

Vadaj said the vehicles were located close to the pond on the property owned by All County Investments Ltd., which Streetsboro Auto and Truck rents space from.

"They took the cars that were actually in the water out," she said.

In the letter, Reinard states the business received its last police call for towing April 14.

Benjamin said he believes "the landowner has simply been tolerant of a situation that [he] shouldn't have been tolerant of. Nevertheless, it's their property and they've got to maintain it."

Sugarbush Court resident Dan Ziegler said the impound lot has existed since 2004 or 2005.

"They've cleaned it up somewhat, but not enough to make a big difference," he said. He added the impound lot is "trashing our neighborhood."

Ziegler said he also wants Streetsboro Auto and Truck to replace a fence he says has been ruined by water overflowing the Streetsboro Auto and Truck pond.

He is one of about a half-dozen condominium residents who've expressed concern about the situation, according to Ellen Fitzpatrick of Valley Property Management, which manages the condo development.

First off let me say What is the meaning of this word Kudos? Is that even in the dictionary?
As far as people complaining how much they had to pay for a police tow, you can bet they don't call the judge or their lawyer to complain so the only people they can complain to is the PD.
If i am the PD and i know they are lawbreakers and thats why their car was towed i would not put up with the complaints i would say if you cant do the time then don't do the crime.
I am not sticking up for poor employees that can not be professional.
I think that maybe the city should do what the Highway patrol does and that is ask for a list of employees and their drivers license numbers to check out these people who are doing the city's dirty work.
That includes Interstate too.
A lot of city's are doing their own towing these days, maybe our mayor ought to look into that unless he knows the headaches involved and just wants it out of the city
At any rate I agree with buckeye backer if they can not do the job then they should not be out there lest someone gets hurt.
lets check these guys out from now on that are towing in our city darn good idea!!!!!

Kudos to Mayor Wagner for standing up and demanding accountability. Wow, what a novel idea. The fact of the matter is this: beyond the zoning issues, the service provided by Streetsboro Auto has deteriorated in recent years. They have poor response times, and employees who do a poor job, with poor equipment. The service provided by Streetsboro Auto compared to Interstate Towing is like the difference between night and day. Talk to the police to verify this - they (Streetsboro Auto) hit two Streetsboro police cruisers in the last month for cryin' out loud, damaging one cruiser badly enough to put it out of service I'm told. Streetsboro Auto has also charged some outrageous rates to citizens, who felt so strongly about the matters that they sent complaint letters to the police department. The fact of the matter is their poor service reflected poorly upon the City when the police were forced to use them, and then the police had to stand by while they did a poor job, and then field complaint letters to boot. You do not have a "right" to city services if you cannot provide quality - the #1 rule of customer service. It's as simple as that.

I wonder if this Zeigler fella has ever had his car towed by this company and didn't like it?
This company has been towing cars in this town for a long long time.
Some people like to drink and drive and then do not like to pay the price for their stupidity.
This is for the mayor
We the people of Streetsboro DO NOT like it when you take away business from local people and give it to businesses outside our fair city.
What else will you give away?
I can see you as a 1 term mayor.
The former mayor would have worked out a politically correct answer to this problem to keep the business in the city.
This company has went out of its way for this community and the city.
They towed city vehicles for years at no cost as a courtesy.
His mechanics spent many hours fixing problems created by city employees who were trying to do a job they were not properly trained for at no cost to the city.
As far as the illegal impound lot, this man was running a lot in this city before almost all of this big city was built and before there was ever any laws pertaining to impound lots.
As for all the cars in that lot the mayor should have looked to the source responsible for that which are under his watch as mayor.
So go ahead mayor take away business from our individuals who not only work here but live here as well.
Hmm i wonder if our mayor lives here(probably not)
I hope it is not another case of people who dont live in the boro coming here and telling those of us who do how to live that sucks.
Onions to the new Mayor Wagner.
Come back when you can not stay so long please
