Rockets win opener of doubleheader

The host Streetsboro baseball team earned a split against Portage Trail Conference rival Crestwood April 25.

The Rockets won an 8-3 decision in the first game but lost a 5-2 decision in the second game.

In the opener, the Rockets (8-7) broke a 3-3 tie with a run in the bottom of the fifth, then broke the game open with four runs in the sixth inning.

Kevin Miller ripped a home run and two singles and Ryan Stainbrook had three hits, including a double, to lead Streetsboro.

Dave Czerny had two singles for Crestwood (8-7).

Dan Kopcak (1-2) got the win on the mound. The Rockets finished with eight hits and one error and Crestwood had five hits and one error.

In the second game, Jared Monroe pitched a complete-game four-hitter and Eric Stuart slammed a home run to led Crestwood.

Scott Ashburn had a double and Brandon Violi had a single for the Rockets.

Crestwood scored three runs in the fifth to take a 4-0 lead. Streetsboro had four hits and one error and the Red Devils had six hits and no errors.

The visiting Rockets posted an 8-6 win over PTC County Division rival Mogadore April 22.

Jeff Roach, who entered the game in the sixth, got the win. Streetsboro improved to 4-2 in the County Division.

The Rockets were scheduled to visit County foe James A. Garfield April 28 in
Garrettsville before returning home to play Garfield April 29. Results of those contests were not available at press time.

They are set to host County rival Windham May 5 before heading to Windham May. Both contests are scheduled to begin at 4:15 p.m.
