Streetsboro -- Criminals need to start worrying about the city's newest police officer who is set to trot into the department in around seven months.

Streetsboro Police Lt. Roy Mosley said the department has chosen a young German shepherd from the Schmidt Kennel in Macedonia as its K-9 officer, who should be ready for limited activity by March.

While a police officer to partner with the K-9 officer has not been selected yet, Mosley said a decision should be made in around two weeks. He said the dog would then go home and live with the officer.

The name of the dog, which is only a few weeks old, will be picked by the handling officer and approved by Police Chief Richard Taiclet, according to Mosley.

The K-9 officer and his handler would have certification training to become a part of the department three to four hours a week at first, according to Mosley.

He said the first phase, training the dog to find hidden narcotics on a suspect or on their belongings, should be completed by March. He said after the first phase of training, the K-9 officer should be certified to be used by the department.

Motley said the K-9 officer should be certified in its second phase of training, apprehending suspects, in about a year.

Mayor Tom Wagner said the city is looking into funding options for leasing a new police cruiser that would only be used for the K-9 officer.

Mosley said the department is preparing estimates for the cost of lease and equipment for City Council to hopefully review in September. He has estimated the cost to purchase a cruiser equipped for the K-9 officer would be around $40,224.

"Our plan is to have the cruiser ready when the dog is ready in six months," Wagner said.

At-large Council member Art Scott thanked the city at a Aug. 25 meeting for moving forward with the project after a fundraising drive brought in at least $7,400 towards funding the cruiser lease, which included a $5,000 donation for the Fraternal Order of the Eagles Aerie 4300.
