Streetsboro -- An overturned semitrailer closed the Ohio Turnpike's westbound lane for six hours on May 30 and 31 after diesel fuel was spilled on the roadway. No injuries resulted from the accident, according to a news release from Streetsboro Fire Department. However, less than 100 gallons of fuel spilled across the westbound lanes necessitated the lanes to be closed from 10:35 p.m. May 30 to 4:30 a.m. May 31, according to the Hiram post of the Ohio Highway Patrol. Portage County Emergency Management Assistant Director John Mason said that a private contractor was brought in to clean the roadway and all fuel was contained at the scene without it contaminating the environment. According to the highway patrol, two semitrailers were driving on the turnpike around 10:30 p.m. May 30, when one changed lanes and hit the back end of the second trailer, which fell on its side along the roadway. The trailer that made the lane change was damaged and leaked diesel fuel along the roadway near the 187.7 westbound mile marker in Streetsboro, according to the state patrol. The initial alert was received at 10:24 p.m., with the first unit arriving at 10:33 p.m., according to a fire department press release. A large amount of diesel fuel was spilled onto the roadway, closing the west bound lanes until around 4:30 a.m. Additional assistance was provided by the Portage County Hazardous Materials Team. The driver of the trailer that changed lanes was charged with a clear distance violation. Comments
