Elam's Auto Parts founder

Russell Elam Jr. died June 13, 2009 at Robinson Memorial Hospital.

Born in Wheelwright, Ky. Aug. 14, 1930, Mr. Elam relocated his young family to Cleveland in 1953 where he was employed with Steel Improvement and A.W. Hecker.

In 1955, they made their home in Streetsboro, where Russell was self-employed.

He established the Gulf Station on Route 14 in 1957 and went on to open an American Station in 1960.

He also was employed with Housemart of Streetsboro until opening Elam's Auto Parts in 1972.

There he, his two sons, his daughter, daughter-in-law and grandson served the community for 35 years. Mr. Elam also was instrumental in the growth of Boy Scout groups and baseball leagues.

Mr. Elam is survived by his bride of 61 years, Mary Evelyn Crisp Elam; son-in-law Lewis Fox of Akron; son Larry (Sue) Elam of Ravenna; son Rusty (Barb) Elam of Aurora; daughter Sheila (James) Davis of Youngstown; brothers George, James and Billy Jo Elam; sisters Delores Butcher, Delarae Music, Mary Blair and Sharon Smith; eight grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Russell was preceded in death by his parents Russell and Maudie Elam; brother Donald Elam; granddaughter Ashley Jade Adams; and grandson Franklin Wayne Fox.

Funeral services took place June 18 at the Shorts-Spicer-Crislip Funeral Home in Streetsboro.
