Streetsboro -- A 9.5-mill school levy, which would have brought in an estimated $4 million a year for the district, was rejected by voters Nov. 3.

Issue 38 failed with 2,060 (44 percent) voting "For" it and 2,599 (56 percent) voting "Against" it.

"It's a sad night for Streetsboro," said Linda Schettler, a member of People's Alliance for Streetsboro Schools, a group backing the levy.

School Board member Denise Baba thanked PASS for its effort campaigning for the levy.

"I think we made the case to the community," she said. "I think PASS did an excellent job communicating the message. There was a tremendous amount of momentum behind the effort that PASS made."

Martin Fleming, an opponent of the school levy, said he's happy with the vote's result.

"I am relieved to know that families and seniors in our community will not have to face a greater tax burden than they are already experiencing during these hard times," he said.

The School Board responded by enacting a variety of cuts and placing an identical property tax levy on the ballot in February. Treasurer Neil Barnes had said in August that the district was facing a "financial crisis," a $911,000 cash deficit at the end of the current fiscal year, June 30, 2010. According to the five-year financial forecast filed in October, the district also faces a $9.9 million deficit by 2014.
