I sat down at work Monday morning, three days after what would have been Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s 81st birthday, and realized I hadn't prepared for this day like I do for other holidays. It didn't feel like most holidays -- I didn't buy anything and I didn't make plans with my family.

I stared out my window, in between the Valentine's Day window clings I had already hung in preparation for Feb. 14, and tried to figure out how to celebrate.

Most things we do for holidays are planned, cliché and cause a boost to the revenue at local retailers. But this one is so much more. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a reminder of how far we've come and how far we still need to go. We need to realize Dr. King's vision of a color-blind society and what he did to try to make it a reality.

We need to realize that we are making history right now and we must continue the legacy that he left behind.

"I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed -- 'we hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal'," Dr. King said in 1963 in Washington, D.C.

My dream is that one day this can be a holiday to celebrate equality that has been a struggle in this country for decades. Until Dr. King's legacy is completely fulfilled and equality is a fact and not a dream, I will do my part to treat everyone as my equal and to share those beliefs on the 364 days around this holiday every year. That is the only way to prepare for the holiday in his honor.

We've still got a lot of work to do, and there are 364 days to prepare for next year.
