Streetsboro — School district leaders expect to be discussing more cost-cutting measures after Streetsboro voters rejected a 9.5-mill, continuing operating levy at the polls Feb. 2.
According to final, but unofficial results from the Portage County Board of Elections, 1,628 (59.24 percent) voters cast ballots “Against” the levy and 1,120 (40.76 percent) voted “For” it with 100 percent of precincts reporting.
“I would like to thank the residents of Streetsboro who did support our schools and voted for our levy today,” said Superintendent Linda T. Keller. “The results are very disappointing for all of us who are dedicated to the education of our 2,220 students.
“We have made some difficult cost saving decisions already, and we will continue to work through our next steps as a result of this levy failure,” she said.
The levy would have brought in $4 million, but would have only meant $2.7 million in new money because a 3.6-mill levy is set to stop collecting at the end of 2010, said Treasurer Neil Barnes.
The rejected levy would have cost the owner of a $100,000 home $199 in new taxes, he added.
Voters defeated a 9.5-mill school levy by a similar margin in November.
Barnes said more cuts will not need to be made immediately, but “continued planning will certainly take place soon.”
School Board member Andy Lesak said the district would need to seek another levy sometime this year, and a May levy passage would help the administration to better plan for the upcoming school year.
Until a levy is passed, Barnes said the district is in danger of being placed in “fiscal caution” by the state.
According to Barnes, a positive balance is projected for the end of this school year, but the district’s October 2009 Five-Year plan projects a deficit of $445,184 for the 2010-11 school year, assuming no new levy is passed this year.
School Board President Cynthia Pennock-Hanish said she was saddened by the results.
“I’m disappointed that our residents were not able to support our school district, community and, mostly, our children today,” she said.
She said the School Board will have to discuss its next move soon.
“More than ever before, in our nation’s history, as well as in the state of Ohio, education is not only the ticket to economic success, but to basic survival,” she said. “We do not have the option to sit back and do nothing.”

The meeting agenda for the 11th has been posted.
I see an executive session entry for discipline of an employee, one can only hope they are suspending the supt. for the remainder of her contract for incompetence. Or perhaps she isn't actually certified and is no longer qualified for her position? Oh, the sweet smell of resignation.
Support the students... NO MORE KELLER!

The board meeting is this Thursday at 6:45. They haven't listed it yet but my understanding is that it will be held at the High school cafeteria.
If you would like to address the board during the public comments section, you just need to sign up at the door, if the paper is not there ask a board member where it is located. Public comments are usually one of the first things after the pledge of allegiance so make sure you are there before 6:45 to sign up. Usually, you are only given 3 minutes to speak but they are willing to extend that depending on how many are signed up, etc. Also, normally, they will not answer questions or sometimes even acknowledge you, so don't be surprised if you just give a three min. monologue and it brings no discussion. The meeting agenda is usually posted on line at the schools web site (although it is not up there yet, I just checked). Just go to the web site, click on Board of Ed. and then meeting agenda. It is helpful to read it before hand, but they do usually have copies there if you want them. Although I've found that the one online will have the treasures expenditure report on it, but it isn't printed out for the meeting.
Hope to see lots of people there.

justintime,
O.k. I know what I wrote didn't make any sense, but what I was trying to say was when I printed this off in, 12-08, it was for 07 and the information was not posted for 08 yet.
I used the report I printed off in 12-08, since I had it already printed. You'd think I would have went back on line and looked for the 2008 report, but I didn't even really think about it. I just went to my file pulled it out and went from there.
But your Point is well taken, with all the research I did, you would think I would have made sure I used the most current information.
My bad, Sorry

AllinaDayswork - Wow, lots of time spent in research. However, I'm not sure why you didn't use the 2008 report? With the change in administration, growth in Streetsboro, etc. these are more current reference numbers.
Saying that, an easier way to check out salaries and other expenditures is to email the treasure or call him and ask for the current salaries of All school employees. They categorize the information into a few different categories and it's important to remember there are Administrator positions (16 employees), Certified Staff positions (160 employees), Classified Staff positions (121 employees), Administrative Secretary Positions (3 employees) and Other Employee Positions (14 people listed) - Total salaries for all school employees 13,101,820.19 NOT including benefits. Plus this was at the beginning of the school years so this doesn't count the cuts that were made in Nov.
Also, if you want to find out more about Aurora and other schools and how they spend their funds, I have found the treasurers of surrounding districts very accommodation in sharing their information and how they work their budgets. My thoughts are that we need to look at districts doing it well and get tips from them on how to do it. That's not meant to degrade our schools but in any profession, don't you want to look at businesses that are doing well and see if you can gleen some info from them that might work for your business? And with regards to our schools, that means much more than just how they run their finances, its also looking at how/what they use to educate their children.
I still believe that bottom line, in regards to finances at our schools, we need to make some compromises and adjustments and then ask for a smaller levy from the taxpayers. Show them what you are willing to bring to the table first because their current tactics of punishing kids/families with cuts and holding out for only one big continuous levy is not working. It is driving the two sides farther apart instead of bringing them together. Because so far, we've spent alot of money on two levy attempts and are farther behind than when we started.
Plus, we really need to get back to focusing on some more important issues at the schools and that's how to better educate our children. Hope everyone makes the Thurs. board meeting because they are supposed to talk about the block scheduling (again) at the HS and hopefully there will be some positive revisions in that curriculum.

First, I would like commend ALL of you that have been posting. When I first started posting opinions and comments 5 years ago, hardly anyone made a contribution.
It is elating and refreshing to see people starting to express their concerns and comments. Some are good some are way out in left field but nonetheless they are welcome.
I am really excited seeing so many people starting to get involved. Now if we can just get the citizens and taxpayers (whether you have children in the district or not), attend the board meetings the Second Thursday of every month, maybe things will begin to change. I would hope that the Administration and Board are reading what is written here but it appears they don't. That is what is really sad about this whole thing.
Now if you went to the board meetings you would find that the Board doesn't let citizens or those in attendance discuss anything once the board meeting begins. Your voice will be stifled if you even try.
They tell those in attendance that you should communicate with them through email. They will never properly respond and while at the meeting they will never answer a question. They just stare at you with no emotions. I don't even think they know you are talking to them. It doesn't show.
Please attend these meetings and you will begin to see what I have seen in the last 7 years attending these meetings. You will begin to understand why I have been posting the last 5 years.
In the beginning I was chastised, ridiculed and been called every name in the book. Now I see everyone is posting what I have been saying all along. You can check this out by going to all the posts I have made in the last 5 years on the Record Pub and in the The Gateway News websites. Everything is documented.
Even the nay sayers from before are relaying what I have said.
I have to agree on post 41 though, it was quite a bit of informtion that is leading us no where. Good information, but pretty much useless in the real world of trying to figure out where we are going wrong.
By the way, to get an excellent rating for your entire district, you only have to have a large percentage pass the state testing. Every student could pass it with a C and get the district an Excellent rating. Now if it was an Excellent with Distinction, that would indeed be an accomplishment for the entire district would have to pass the State test with an average of a B or higher.
So don't be so proud of an excellent rating. It is extremely dissappointing that we have not yet reached that.
Our children of this community are not really getting the high quality education we think they are.
Is it the fault of the teachers? Except for maybe a handful of the teachers, No. We have high quality teachers. However, it doesn't matter how extraordinary the teachers are, if you don't provide the tools, materials, technology and supplies for these educators you will never achieve the goal you seek.
It sort of like NASA in Cleveland. With all that knowledge, if the Government didn't provide the funding for the tools and technology needed, we wouldn't have a space station today no matter how intelligent of a workforce we had.
The administration and School Board do not have the computer and technology skills to bring our children into a digital era.
Small classes are needed because the 50 year old method we use to teach students is way outdated and makes it hard for students to slow down that much to have success. Children live in a extremely fast paced world today whether you want to believe it or not and our current method of teaching stifles that fast paced world they live in outside of the classroom walls.
Half our teaching staff would excell with the right technology while the other half would fall flat on their face. The ones who fall flat on their face are the ones who have little or no skills in computers and technology. They shy away for the would feel they would be embarrassed trying to compete with the students on what they know about computers.
The simplest and easiest and MOST cost effective way of educating students would be to computerize and digitize our education system.
Go to Google and search for Technology in Public Schools and maybe, just maybe you will catch the drift of what I am talking about. Don't take my word for it but listen to all the experts out there that have realized this is what we have to do and how our current method of education is greatly shortchanging the advatages our children could have.
The time for change was almost ten years ago and we are still hammering away with a method that is obsolete in todays world. When will we commit and make the change. Funding is getting even harder and I'm am fed up with throwing money into something that just doesn't work anymore.
I personally (in my opinion), would like to see dramatic change and reform arrive as soon as possible. The only way that will happen is if our Current Board and Administration dump this old method and bring in the new. I really don't think this Adminstration and School Board has the intellectual capacity to make it happen. If they did, they wouldn't have been so careless as to ask for a 9.5 mil continous levy.
Martin Fleming
Quite a bit of information has been put into the light and people are looking at this from all different angles.

In my opinion for the School Board President to make such a "surrealistic" comment it is for this reason you will constantly get a "NO" vote. Get it in History it has been said "NO TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION". The other part is that "Education for those that get educated leave this State to get economic success elsewhere". Lastly, you do not have options because you choose "NOT TO LISTEN FOR YOU HAVE ALL THE ANSWERS", maybe its time for you to listen and you might get educated. Get it!
