Letter: Applauds those who voted levy down

June 6, 2007

According to the May 9 issue of The Gateway News, the school levy in Streetsboro was voted down in the May 8 election 1,455 to 949 votes, according to final, but unofficial results from the Portage County Board of Elections.

I agree with the view that Issue 4's lack of an expiration date was unacceptable. It's not only property taxes going up, but everything. It hurts the people on fixed incomes the most.

I applaud those who took a stand and voted "No;" however, as always, the School Board will not take "No" for an answer, and the issue will be back in the August special election until they wear us down and they get what they want.

Please, Streetsboro voters, don't be bullied. My advice to the School Board is to learn to live on less and do without. It takes almost half my mother's Social Security income check twice a year to pay the property taxes, even with the Homestead exemption. It doesn't leave much for all the other expenses.

State leaders in Columbus should help fix the schools' financial dilemma. Now that we have a Democrat for governor, what is his plan to remedy the problem?
