Man charged after trying to use bad check to repay bank loan

Streetsboro -- An investigator for a Route 14 bank reported Jan. 31 a man tried to repay a $4,500 loan with a bad check, police said.

According to the report, the man deposited a check in August, but the bank account from which the check was written had been closed. The investigator told police the man has been contacted several times about the situation, but had not taken steps to repay the funds.

Police said the man was charged with fraud and was sent a court summons by mail.

Driving under suspension

Jan. 29. Motorist charged: An officer heard a vehicle with a loud exhaust system pull out of a Route 14 business during the afternoon and pulled the driver over on Interstate 480 after the noise didn't subside.

According to the report, the driver was taking a passenger to a doctor's appointment, but he did not have his drivers' license on him. Police said a background check found the driver's license was under suspension. The Portage County Sheriff's Office also had issued two active warrants for the motorist.

The driver was charged with driving under a suspended license and was taken to Portage County Justice Center, according to the report. Police said the passenger called for a friend to pick him up along with the vehicle.

Public indecency

Jan. 29. Man charged: A Route 303 resident reported a man was trying to enter his home without permission during the evening.

According to the report, officers found the man with his pants down defecating in the resident's yard. Police said the man showed signs of intoxication and could not provide any identification.

The man was charged with disorderly conduct by intoxication and public indecency. He was taken to Portage County Jail.

Theft

Jan. 31. Employee charged with theft: A manager of a Singletary Drive business reported catching an employee allegedly stealing merchandise for a second time after midnight.

According to the report, the employee had originally been caught in December removing a pair of shoe insoles from a package and putting them into his shoes and was warned he would be fired if it happened again. The manager told police that Jan. 31, the employee was allegedly trying to put a bottle of liquor into his pants.

Police said the man was charged with theft and was released at the police station.

Intoxicated driving

Feb. 2. Motorist charged: An officer observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed with no headlights on Route 43 after midnight.

According to the report, the officer pulled the driver over and noticed signs of intoxication. Police said the driver failed a field sobriety test, and a bag of suspected marijuana was found in the vehicle.

The driver was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, possession of suspected marijuana, speeding and driving with no headlights, according to the report. Police said the driver was later found to have a blood alcohol level of .209.

Feb. 2. Intoxicated motorist drives off roadway: Officers responded to a traffic accident on Bridgeport Avenue in which a vehicle left the roadway and fell into a small ravine.

According to the report, the driver, who had minor scratches and was treated at the scene by the fire department, showed signs of intoxication and failed a field sobriety test. Police said the man refused a breath test and was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

The driver was released at the police station and the vehicle, which suffered an undisclosed amount of damage, was towed from the scene.
