Father, son help police catch alleged gasoline thieves

Streetsboro -- Police said a father and son helped them catch an employee of a gas station who was allegedly letting a friend take gas without paying for it.

The manager of the gas station reported receiving April 8 an anonymous call that an employee was allowing a friend to take gas without paying for it.

According to the report, the caller said he was at the station with his son when he saw a man drive off without paying for gas, worth an undisclosed amount, and followed the man to a Singletary Drive business. The manager told police the caller confronted the man, who told the caller that a friend who works at the station lets him fill up without paying "all the time," stated the police report.

The manager said the employee admitted that she allowed the man to take the gas, according to the report.

Police said the man and the employee were charged with theft. The employee was released from the police station. The man was sent a court summons in the mail.

Criminal damage

April 7. Park restroom door damaged: A service department employee reported the door to the women's restroom at City Park had been damaged at an undetermined date.

According to the report, the door, worth an undisclosed amount, was "kicked and pried" open, and feces were found on the ceiling of the bathroom.

Police said there are no suspects at this time.

Menacing

April 9. Customer charged with menacing: A Route 14 restaurant reported a customer was threatening an employee during the early evening.

According to the report, the customer began yelling at the employee he knew and refused to leave the building when asked by the manager.

Officers told the customer to leave and not return to the restaurant, according to the report. Police said the customer was charged with menacing and will be sent a court summons in the mail.

Theft

April 10. Juveniles charged with shoplifting: A Singletary Drive loss prevention officer reported two juveniles were being detained for trying to leave the store with $202 worth of items during the afternoon.

According to the report, the loss prevention officer said he witnessed the juveniles take the items on surveillance and had stopped them from exiting the store.

Police said the juveniles were charged with theft and were released to their parents.

Driving under suspension

April 10. Driver charged with driving under suspension: An officer saw a vehicle on Route 14 driving at around 2 a.m. without headlights on and pulled the vehicle over.

According to the report, the driver's license was under suspension. Police said the man was charged with driving under a suspension and driving with no headlights and was released at the scene.

Domestic violence

April 10. Woman charged with domestic violence: Officers responded to a report of woman striking her boyfriend at their apartment in the southeastern quadrant of the city in the morning.

According to the report, the boyfriend said he got into an argument with the woman, who then struck him repeatedly on the neck and forehead, leaving red marks. No medical attention was needed, according to the report.

Police said the woman was charged with domestic violence and was taken to Portage County Jail.

Operating a vehicle while intoxicated

April 12. Motorist charged with OVI: An officer saw a vehicle stuck in the mud of the median on Interstate 480 during the early morning and pulled over to investigate.

According to the report, the officer noticed signs of intoxication from the driver, who then failed a field sobriety test. Police said the man was later found to have a blood alcohol level of .188 and was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated and failure to control.

The driver was taken to Portage County Jail, and the vehicle was towed from the scene.

Drug possession

April 14. Juvenile arrested for possession of suspected marijuana: An officer pulled over a vehicle on Route 43 for not having its headlights on after midnight and found the driver to be a juvenile who was breaking curfew.

According to the report, the officer found suspected marijuana and an item of drug paraphernalia while searching the vehicle. Police said the driver was charged with no headlights, violating curfew, and possession of suspected marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

The juvenile was processed at the police station and then released to his mother.
