Girls keep making strides

May 7, 2008

The Streetsboro girls track and field team placed 20th with four points at the 28th Optimist Meet May 3 at Austintown Fitch High School.

Twinsburg placed first out of 28 teams with 80.25 points and Hudson (74) and North Canton Hoover (73.5) placed second and third, respectively.

Tiara Bivins was the Rockets' lone representative at the meet. She finished sixth in the 200 with a time of 27.25 seconds and eighth in the 100 (13.15).

"Tiara had a problem with the starting blocks in the 100," said Streetsboro head coach Tom Fesemyer. "I think that flustered her a little bit. She had a bad start, but under the circumstances, she ran well."

The Rockets placed fourth with 66 points at the Mogadore Wildcat Invitational May 2.

Ravenna won the competition with 142 points and Rootstown (83.5) and Akron Manchester (72) finished second and third, respectively.

Kelsey Cianci won the high jump with a leap of 5 feet and Tiara Bivins placed first in the 100 (12.73).

The following Streetsboro athletes placed in their events:

3,200 relay: Heather Poston, Rachel Oravec, Gabrielle Ryczek and Alex Lesak, fourth, 11:18.5

100: Bivins, first, 12.73

800 relay: Cianci, Kaitlin Twigger, Dare Gleason and Ashley Lawson, third, 1:56.2

On April 30 in Ravenna, Waterloo and Garfield posted 84-44 and 91-37 victories over Streetsboro.

Bivins picked up victories in the 100 (13.1) and 200 (27.6) and joined Cianci, Gleason and Lawson on the winning 400 relay team (54.4).

1,600: Rachel Oravec, third, 6:12

400: Tiffany Yanulaitis, third, 1:08.1

800: Poston, second, 2:48

"Every time Rachel steps on the track, she's dropping time," Fesemyer said. "And we're talking double digits, too. It's kind of fun to watch. She has made an amazing improvement."

The Rockets were scheduled to head to Ravenna to compete against PTC County rival Rootstown May 6. Results were not available at press time.

They are set to participate at the Columbiana Invitational May 10 at 9 a.m.
