Softball unit drops sixth one-run loss

May 7, 2008

The host Streetsboro softball team lost a 4-3 decision to Aurora May 1.

The Rockets took a 2-0 lead with two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Aurora came back with four runs in the fifth and Streetsboro added a run in the bottom of the fifth.

Aurora had six hits and no errors and the Rockets had five hits and four errors.

Starting pitcher Kristin Monahan took the loss on the mound.

"I'm tired of one-run losses," said Rockets head coach Tim Foster. "We've had six one-runners this year. The top of our order is slumping right now and the bottom hasn't quite picked it up.

"There's no way that it should have been 4-3," he added. "It wasn't that we struck out against Aurora, it's just that they hit them straight to them."

Visiting Streetsboro lost a 3-0 decision to Portage Trail Conference County Division rival James A. Garfield April 30 in Garrettsville.

Sophomore pitcher Haley Knight was one out away from pitching a no-hitter, but the Rockets managed a hit in the top of the seventh inning.

Knight also had a single, a double and drove in a run at the plate. Renee Yonker also had two hits, including a double and a run batted in for Garfield (11-4, 7-1).

Garfield, which had 11 hits and two errors, scored twice in the third and once in the sixth.

Streetsboro had one hit and one error. Knight improved to 10-1 on the season. Jessica Hess (6-8) took the loss for the Rockets.

Streetsboro's record stood at 7-9, 4-4 in the Portage Trail Conference County Division as of press time.

The Rockets found out their postseason fate May 4 as the Rockets were seeded ninth in the Division II Akron district tournament.

Streetsboro will open its playoff run May 13 against fifth-seeded Revere in Richfield. First pitch is set for 4:30 p.m.

According to Streetsboro coach Tim Foster, the match with the Minutemen is a winnable one.

"If we come out and we're not flat, we can beat Revere," Foster said. "In the next round ... it's likely going to be Walsh."

The second round game is set to take place at May 14 at 4:30 p.m.

Archbishop Hoban was given the top seed in the Akron district, followed by Tallmadge (No. 2), Walsh Jesuit (No. 3) and Copley (No. 4).

The Rockets were scheduled to host PTC County foe Windham May 5 before heading to Windham May 6. Results of those contests were not available at press time.

They are set to host Akron Garfield at 4:30 p.m. Streetsboro is scheduled to visit County rival Rootstown May 12 before returning home to play Rootstown May 13. Both contests are slated to begin at 4:15 p.m.
