Streetsboro -- A drive-thru pharmacy will be part of a 10,245-square-foot expansion to the Giant Eagle that was unanimously approved Nov. 12 by the planning and zoning commission.
"This expansion is to remodel a former Tops, and it will allow us to have all the features of a new Giant Eagle," said Pat Avolio, Giant Eagle development and fuel construction director.
According to proposed site plans, the expansion will include a drive-thru on the western end of the building near Seasons Road and Route 43 where there currently is a parking area with 41 spaces. The addition will continue the brick style of the store and include a white overhang above the pick-up window.
Representing Giant Eagle, Landau Public Relations Senior Account Executive Erik Yorke said the number of additional jobs, other remodeling plans and cost of the expansion were still being determined at press time.
Yorke said the expansion should start construction in the late spring or early summer 2009.
Giant Eagle moved to the 57,000-square-foot Route 303 store in February 2007 from a smaller Market Square Plaza location.
A traffic study completed for the project indicated that the added traffic would not affected motorists on Seasons Road or Route 43. GetGo gas station were built at the west end of the building near Seasons Road and Route 43.
Giant Eagle is currently in court with the city after filing an administrative appeal after the Streetsboro Board of Building and Zoning Appeals denied a conditional use permit for the gas station because of possible traffic congestion, noise issues and potential contamination from underground fuel tank leaks. The suit asks for the conditional zoning needed for construction be granted.
A hearing on the GetGo is set for Dec. 8 in Portage County Court of Common Pleas at 9 a.m.
