Akron -- Summit County Sheriff Drew Alexander on Feb. 5 announced the indictment of 66 people, culminating a two-year investigation into alleged organized gambling in the county.
The investigation centered on alleged illegal "Vegas night" operations. Ohio law allows charities to sponsor these events, but requires all participants to be volunteers and prohibits paying any participants.
Charges handed down in the indictments include engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity (first-degree felony), money laundering (third-degree felony), grand theft (fourth-degree felony), operating a gambling house (fifth-degree felony) and gambling (fifth-degree felony and first-degree misdemeanor).
Five residential properties, one commercial property in Wheeling, W.Va., and six vehicles are being seized in connection to the investigation.
