In order to help alleviate the current shortage of football officials in the state of Ohio, the Summit Portage Officials Association offers football officiating training classes.
The football officiating classes require no prerequisites.
The classes take students through the steps needed to become a trained, licensed football official in Ohio.
These classes will feature licensed football officials as the instructors. The subjects covered will include football rules, play situations and on-field mechanics.
Also covered will be interfacing with players and coaches, professionalism and the philosophy and mental approach needed to cover difficult or challenging situations.
The classes are set to begin July 14 at 7 p.m. The classes are scheduled to take place at the Betty Jane Community Learning Center, 444 Darrow Rd., Akron.
Classes are set to continue at this location on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m. Anyone interested in attending this class or in need of further information can call Ed Markowski at 330-896-4365 or 330-212-7600.
The cost of the class is $90, which covers all books, testing materials and registration with the Ohio High School Athletic Association.
The final examination will be the National Federation Football Officials licensing examination.
Students also will be provided with the opportunity to be hired to officiate high school underclass football games during the subsequent season.
