This is to all the good citizens of Streetsboro
Recently we all received a letter in the mail that many including myself thought was a no respond letter.
This is from Direct Energy aggregation and if you don't respond to it by phone or by letter you will be enrolled in a program sponsored by the city to take over the handling and billing of your gas bill.
I do not mean you will be billed by the city but your gas bill rates will be controlled by the city.
I personally had a chance to speak with a rep from Direct energy and asked him why the city is doing this.
His answer to me was to get votes.
I do not believe this and neither should you.
I have opted out of this program thanks to a neighbor of mine informing me.
Now i am urging you all to do the same.
In the first place if a letter is sent to you requesting you to join a different entity for your gas you should have to fill that letter out and sign that you want it.
Unfortunately our public officials ( when i called the city operator i was directed to the mayors office)have seen fit to send a letter to all of us that states if you dont respond you WILL BE ENROLLED in this program.
I can not help but see something illegal in this.
In other words he can send you a letter and say if you don't respond to this letter he will take $500.00 dollars from your checking account thank you very much.
I can see no other reason for the city to try and get involved in your gas bill than to make a percentage off it overall( I do not believe the vote theory).
So good citizens of Streetsboro I say to you
YOU BETTER RESPOND TO THAT LETTER

I dont remember anything on the ballot. I called the number and opted out because my rates were 2 dollars per mcf cheaper than the one the city sent me. I had a company from out of state send me a book and said if i didnt respond, i would be billed for the book. I called the state and they told me I do not have to pay for any charges for the book, this is state law. If someone sends you something in the mail and then expects you to pay for it, at least in ohio, it is illegal. I kept the book and I didnt pay for it. I called the company and they removed the charges.

he law allows for opt-in aggregation or opt-out aggregation.
Opt-in Aggregation
Opt-in aggregation is a program that permits each customer to sign up individually to participate in the program. If the local government chooses Opt-in aggregation, it can proceed to develop a plan and start signing up customers. The plan must include all rates and terms for customers to consider when deciding to join.
Opt-out Aggregation
Opt-out aggregation is a program that automatically enrolls all local residents, unless they individually opt-out of the program (choose not to be included). If a community chooses this form of aggregation, a number of steps are required:
* A majority of voters must authorize opt-out aggregation in an election. The issue appears on a primary or general election ballot for your consideration.
* If authorized by a majority of the vote, the local government must form a plan of operation and management. They must also hold at least two public hearings to allow customers to voice any concerns over the proposed plan.
* Once the local government has adopted the plan, each customer to be aggregated must be notified that they will be automatically enrolled in the program unless they specifically elect not to participate. This notification must also state the rates, charges, and other terms and conditions of enrollment in the program. The opt-out notice is usually a letter accompanied by a post card to be mailed back if you do not want to participate or sometimes, a phone number to call or web site to visit to opt-out.
* The local government must allow anyone enrolled in the program an opportunity to opt-out every two years without paying a switching fee.
HI folks just copy and pasted this from the puco website
Now i ask you did anyone reading this remember voting to allow the city to send out opt out letters?
