LETTER: Lack of parks funds concerns resident

Published:

As president of the

Moebius Nature Center in Aurora, chairman of wildlife sanctuaries for the Audubon Society of Greater Cleveland and a Portage County resident, I am deeply concerned about the current funding situation for our Portage Park District.

The park system does not have the support necessary to keep its doors open for the long term. It is surviving based upon donations, and that is not a sustainable situation. Our funding of Portage parks is miniscule compared to other counties. The funding request is very small -- only 0.5 mill. This amount will make all the difference between a Portage Park District that is thriving or just barely surviving.

This funding will allow the opening of current park properties, trail maintenance and the possibility of bike paths. Our parks make Portage County an attractive place to live and visit. They keep our county's natural beauty and protect our water supply.

They provide a place for wildlife, both plant and animal. They give us wonderful, convenient places to stay connected to our natural world. Please vote "yes" on Issue 10 on May 6. Keep our Portage Park District strong.

James W. Tomko, Aurora
