American Red Cross seeking local heroes

by Rachel Sluss | Reporter Published:

The American Red Cross is accepting local hero nominations from Portage, Geauga and Lake county citizens.

"Nominees qualify for the competition if they saved another's life or bettered their community as a whole," said Shelley Sprang, a special events coordinator at the American Red Cross.

The deadline for submissions has been extended to March 1, in hopes of discovering more local heroes. To qualify, nominees must either reside or be employed in the participating counties. It is also required that the heroic event took place in 2013.

A judge panel made up of community members will review nominees and decide who the best qualifiers are. A ceremony will take place May 15 at 4:30 p.m. in the Bertram Inn at 600 N. Aurora Road, for those chosen.

The American Red Cross will give an array of awards at the ceremony and allow the selected heroes to tell their stories. The American Red Cross will recognize one hero with the Robinson Memorial Hospital Paragon Award.

This award will be given to a nominee who demonstrates exceptional leadership in his or her community. Additional awards will be offered separately to everyday local heroes and professional heroes such as policemen or firefighters.
