Streetsboro boys basketball team gets past Springfield


The Streetsboro boys basketball team broke a 9-9 first-quarter tie by outscoring Akron Springfield 30-19 in the second and third quarters on the way to a 53-40 Portage Trail Conference Metro Division victory Jan. 18 on the road.

The Rockets (7-6, 6-2) took a 24-20 halftime lead, then went on a 15-8 scoring run in the third quarter to take a comfortable 39-28 advantage into the final eight minutes.

Brandon Gency led the Rockets with 16 points, including a trio of three-pointers, while Jordan Matusik chipped in with 15 points.

Jacob Kitchen had four three-pointers and tied teammate Victor Dorsey with a game-high 18 points.

Streetsboro posted a 48-39 victory in the junior varsity contest. Jerry Judd and Avery VanReeth each had 16 points for the Rockets.
