Chagrin Falls -- For the second straight week, the Streetsboro wrestling team showed it has some brights spots in a major tournament.
The Rockets finished 12th with 94 points at the Kenston Invitational Tournament Dec. 28 in Chagrin Falls.
Crestwood won the team title with 133.5 points, just a half-point ahead of runner-up Garfield Heights.
Streetsboro head coach Rick Charlton said his team had good moments and bad at Kenston as three Rockets reached the podium.
"We had a lot of guys wrestle well and we've got a lot of improvement to make," he said.
"We just have to get back at it."
Streetsboro's lone finalist was Kyle Woods at 160 pounds.
After pinning Crestwood's Aaron Zielinski in 1 minute, 15 seconds and beating Boardman's Tyler Dempsey 8-0, Woods upset second-seeded Sam Gambatese of Kenston in the semifinals 9-3.
In the final, Woods ran into top-seeded David Celinski of Garfield Heights. Woods lost a 7-3 decision to Celinski.
"Kyle has been making a lot of improvements and it's really starting to show," Charlton said.
It took the defending Division I state runner-up to derail the perfect season for junior Tyler Rowland at 195 pounds.
Rowland pinned his first two opponents, sticking Ravenna's Nathan Pritchett in 2:27 and Geneva's Matt Kozlowski in 4:49. Rowland ran into Ashtabula Lakeside's Kyle Conel in the semifinals.
Trailing late in the match, Rowland tried to throw Conel, but he ended up getting caught and pinned 5:54.
Rowland rebounded with a 7-2 win over North Olmsted's Alec Winston, setting up a rematch of the final at the Hudson Holiday Tournament against Maple Heights' Monterol Johnson in the third-place match.
The result was pretty much the same as the previous week. After pushing Johnson hard in the second half of the match, Rowland got a single-leg cradle and pinned Johnson in 4:54.
"He wrestles really hard for the whole six minutes and he loves it," Charlton said.
The Rockets also got a third-place finish from 138-pounder Chris Dynowski, who defeated Chardon's Matt Liggett 4-1 in third-place match.
Streetsboro is scheduled to host the Streetsboro Duals Jan. 9 at 9 a.m. Copley, Shaker Heights, Akron Buchtel and Southeast are expected to participate.
