Streetsboro -- Despite what head coach Nick Marcini called a slow start, the host Streetsboro boys basketball team collected a 74-39 win over Rootstown in a Portage Trail Conference County Division contest Jan. 17.

"We turned the ball over and didn't take care of it," he said. "I think we were a little lackadaisical coming out in the first half. I thought we picked up the energy in the start of the third quarter.

"Obviously with that run, the guys just have to understand they have to bring that effort and attitude all 32 minutes. I thought, overall, we played pretty well as a team.

"We're sharing the ball a lot better and that sort of thing. I think we forced some shots that we didn't do [Jan. 15]. I don't know if we took a step back, but we're definitely getting better. We have a lot of work to do."

The Rockets went into the second half leading Rootstown 31-19. Posting its best effort in the third quarter, Streetsboro nearly doubled its point production of the first two quarters combined after scoring 30 points in the third period.

Running a full-court press, the Rockets scored 17 points in the first three minutes of the third quarter.

Around the six-minute mark, Streetsboro grabbed five steals, forced four fouls and collected 10 points over the course of the next minute, prompting the Rovers (2-10, 0-6) to take a time-out.

Rootstown was able to slow the Rockets' point production for the remainder of the game. However, Streetsboro built a 61-31 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Daniel Sapp led the Rockets with 23 points and eight rebounds. Jerry Judd added 13 points and Reggie Dublin contributed 12 points for the Rockets.

Sophomore Josh Kaut led Rootstown with 17 points and six rebounds.

"I think he [Josh Kaut] was playing JV [junior varsity] minutes early on in the year, so he's really improved," Marcini said. "I know I got on Jerry Judd because he kept going right around him. I like him a lot. I think their team plays really hard."

Streetsboro was scheduled to entertain PTC rival Ravenna Jan. 21. Results were not available at press time.

The Rockets are set to host County Division foe Southeast Jan. 24 before heading to Mogadore for a County Division showdown Jan. 28. Both varsity contests are scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
