After going winless in non-league play into the month of May, the Streetsboro baseball team finally won a nonleague battle.

Then, the Rockets captured a second straight win in nonleague action.

Streetsboro head coach Chris Scisciani likes that his team is winning outside of the league.

The Rockets won two straight nonleague affairs -- 16-1 over Rittman May 3 at Canal Park in Akron and 3-0 over Western Reserve Academy May 2 at home.

With the wins, Streetsboro improved to 6-8 overall.

Senior Austin Szemacs had quite a day. He was the winning pitcher as he fired a one-hitter against Rittman to move to 2-1 this year.

Szemacs also belted an inside the park home run He slammed the ball to deep center.

The only hit Szemacs allowed was a double in the third inning by Rittman freshman Jeremiah Butcher.

Streetsboro plated eight runs in the top of the fourth and seven more in the top of the sixth. Szemacs scored three times and had a stolen base as well.

"Austin gave us another excellent pitching outing and that was great for him to hit an inside-the-park homer at Canal Park," Scisciani said.

Senior Alex Bison ripped a double, two runs batted in and a run scored, while senior Gage Simpkins had a double, scored three runs and knocked in two RBIs.

Junior pitcher Ricky Delambo tossed a two-hit shutout against.

Delambo fanned nine Pioneer batters in the win to move to 3-2 this year.

"Ricky pitched extremely well and we have had a lot of guys step up this year on the mound," Scisciani said. "It was nice to see the seniors win."

Senior catcher Nate Bailey knocked in two runs with a single, while Bison hit a solo home run. Szemacs added a double and scored once.

"It was nice to see Alex [Bison] get out of his slump," Scisciani said. "He had been struggling at the dish and Alex got a nice solo shot and hopefully, his slump is over."

The Rockets earned an 11-1 win in the junior varsity game.

Scisciani also received his club's postseason draw at the May 4 seed meeting. Streetsboro was seeded eighth out of 11 teams at the Akron Canal Park Division II sectional-district tournament.

The Rockets are set to play May 13 at Richfield Revere (4-11-1), the seventh seed. Game time is scheduled for 5 p.m.

Woodridge earned the top seed and Chagrin Falls and Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary earned the second and third seeds, respectively.

"I thought we might have gotten the seventh seed, but I know Revere plays in the very strong Suburban League," Scisciani said.

Streetsboro was scheduled to host Portage Trail Conference County Division rival Mogadore May 5 before heading to Mogadore May 6. Results of both games were not available at press time.

The Rockets are set to visit County Division foe Waterloo May 8 before returning home to play Mayfield May 9. Both varsity games are scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.

Streetsboro is set to host County Division rival Woodridge May 12 at 4:15 p.m.
