Last year was a successful one for the Streetsboro golf team.
The Rockets finished 8-4 in the Portage Trail Conference County Division and placed fourth in the County Division tournament.
Streetsboro also finished eighth in Division II sectional play.
This year, the Rockets hope to do even better.
Streetsboro, which is led by 13th-year head coach Bruce Thomas, has everyone back in the lineup from last year.
"All of the golfers have been working hard to make this the year the Rockets win the championship in golf," Thomas said.
The Rockets are led by seniors Philip Lago, Cody Johnson and Evan Meisinger and juniors Ty Butler and Cory Antoncic. Thomas also has high hopes for first-year senior varsity player Brandon Miller.
"We have three golfers who will play consistent golf in Lago, Johnson and Butler," Thomas said. "We need one of the other golfers to come through on a regular basis."
Johnson qualified for the Kenny Novak Championship, which concluded July 31 at Club Walden in Aurora.
He was one of only 27 golfers from Northeast Ohio who qualified for the Northern Ohio PGA championship tournament.
He placed 27th with a score of 181 (90 and 91).
"Lago, Johnson and Butler have played very well in tournaments this summer and others have been working on their game to make this an unforgettable season," Thomas said.
The league is very competitive with defending champion Southeast, Mogadore and Woodridge in the mix. Thomas, on the other hand, isn't going to count anybody out.
"Rootstown, Waterloo and Garfield will be tough to beat at their home course so it should be an interesting year," he said.
Streetsboro is scheduled to make its 2014 debut against Mogadore Aug. 7 on its home course, Raccoon Hill Golf Course in Kent. Play is set to begin at 9 a.m.
The Rockets are scheduled to play Rootstown Aug. 8 at the Kent State University Golf Course. Play is set to begin at 11 a.m.
Streetsboro is scheduled to visit Waterloo Aug. 11 at Paradise Lake Golf Course in Mogadore. Play is set to begin at 3:45 p.m.
The Rockets are scheduled to compete in the Nordonia Classic Aug. 12 at Ellsworth Meadows Golf Course in Hudson. Play is set to begin at 8 a.m.
