The familiar face of Bill Smerglia is gone.

But another familiar face will take his spot.

Da'Nae Redding, a 2011 Streetsboro graduate who was a setter for the Rockets, enters her first year as Streetsboro's head coach.

Redding replaces Smerglia, who resigned last year after spending 14 years with the Rockets.

Streetsboro finished 9-14 overall after losing 25-15, 27-25, 25-18 decision to Chesterland West Geauga in Division II sectional play.

The Rockets also finished 7-5 in the Portage Trail Conference County Division.

Streetsboro lost five seniors from a year ago. They are outside hitters Taylor Hillyer and Kristen MacMillen, middle hitter Paige Saunders, Whitney Poston and Gabby Reznik-Duffer.

The key returnees from a year ago are senior outside hitter Miranda Vasko, defensive specialist Alexa Lutynsky and defensive specialist Natalie Schneider; and juniors Alycia Scali, who did not have an official position as of press time, and middle hitter Sydney Campbell.

"Sydney Campbell brings great energy and leadership to the team," Redding said. "She has a very positive presence on and off the court. Miranda Vasko is a great versatile player who is an essential part to our overall rhythm on the court.

"Alexa Lutynsky, our captain, is a hard worker who never gives up on a play. "

Redding's varsity assistant is Taylor Wright. Jessica Scott is the junior varsity head coach.

Redding plans to use both a 6-2 and a 5-1 lineup.

"With our determined coaching staff and older leaders on the team, we are going to mold Streetsboro volleyball into a championship program again.," she said.

The Rockets were scheduled to make their 2014 debut at Bedford Aug. 19. Results were not available at press time.

They are set to host County Division rival Rootstown Aug. 26 at 7 p.m.
